CDMX

Kicked off the new year with a new country visited – Mexico! My friend recently turned 30 and invited a gaggle of us to celebrate this special occasion with her 🙂

But first – look at this cool Airbnb we stayed at :O

The colors! The details! It’s like something straight from Architectural Digest. We chatted with the owners before we left, and they actually did say they were hoping they get into AD, and I hope they do!

Some thoughts I had whilst traveling:

  1. At least in the neighborhoods we walked around (La Condesa, Roma, Roma Norte), CDMX felt way more similar to NYC than I expected, with the long queues for food, cute cafes on every corner, and pricey vintage shops. Like if Williamsburg was warmer, hazier, interwoven with bougainvillea and lush greenery, had signs in Spanish, and you couldn’t drink the tap water – that’s what it felt like.
  2. Hot air balloon rides are super fun! I didn’t feel the height at all because the ascent was so gradual. We had a slightly rough landing though (we hit the ground, hopped forward, and I skinned my knee through my tights against the basket). But I’ve also heard from other people who’ve hot air ballooned in the area previously that someone sprained their ankle, so I guess we had a pretty good landing by comparison then haha.
  3. I wasn’t too familiar with Mexican food apart from tacos, guacamole, and churros before the trip. However, I found that a lot of the food I tried could be described as a different form of taco: tostadas (open-faced, crunchy taco), enchiladas (taco in chili sauce), enfrijoladas (taco in bean sauce), sope (open-faced taco with a thick base), flautas (tacos rolled up into flutes), chilaquiles (okay not really taco but a tortilla chip salad).

¡Hasta luego, CDMX! Hopefully I’ll be back one day with some better Spanish 🙂
